SA.PE.I.

THE PROJECT
Eight-hundred and sixty kilometres of submarine cable, installed at a maximum depth of 1,630 metres, transmitting 1000 MW. It is a record-breaking project which, besides being the longest power transmission link ever realised worldwide by a single supplier, it is also the leader both in terms of power transmitted and the maximum depth reached.
This is the SA.PE.I. project, a submarine power link between the electricity grids of Sardinia and the Italian mainland, which Prysmian is undertaking on behalf of the national grid operator Terna Rete Elettrica Nazionale.
During 2007 Prysmian continued with the implementation of the connection, in line with the final plans and timetable.
Between 2006 and 2007 Prysmian completed the stages for the design and preparation of the components, and is now at a very advanced stage in terms of the production of the cables and their installation. The completion of all the installation work for the first stage (Pole 1) is expected by mid-August 2008 and this will make it possible to put the link into operation, albeit at reduced capacity, in the first few months of 2009.
